Screen Australia has rolled out a suite of dynamic programs aimed at bolstering the theatrical presence and global resonance of Australian cinema. These initiatives, developed in partnership with leading international film entities Tatino Films and Publikum, are designed to equip local filmmakers with essential tools for refining their projects and strategically engaging audiences. The overarching goal is to amplify the impact of Australian stories on both domestic and international screens.

Australia's New Film Development Programs: "First Cut Lab" and "Impact & Insights"

On July 1, 2026, Screen Australia officially unveiled its new "Market & Audience" strategy with the introduction of two key programs: "First Cut Lab" and "Impact & Insights." These initiatives are specifically tailored for scripted narrative features intended for theatrical release, offering a comprehensive approach to film development and distribution.

The "First Cut Lab" program, a collaboration with Tatino Films, focuses on empowering early to mid-career filmmakers. It targets narrative features with budgets under AUD8 million ($5.5 million) that are either entering or already in post-production. Each round will select up to four projects to participate in workshops and receive mentorship from a diverse panel of international experts, including festival programmers, directors, editors, and producers. Tatino Films brings a wealth of experience, having previously guided over 300 film talents across more than 50 countries on 150 diverse screen projects.

Complementing this, the "Impact & Insights" program pairs established filmmakers—those with projects in late-stage development or post-production—with the strategic audience advisory firm Publikum. Utilizing advanced anthropological research and data analytics, Publikum's methodology helps filmmakers identify and connect with potential audiences both domestically and globally. Each round of this program will accommodate up to three development projects and five post-production titles, with personalized workshops led by Publikum informing critical decisions related to creative direction, marketing, and distribution strategies.

Rakel Tansley, the head of market and audience at Screen Australia, emphasized the growing complexity of connecting Australian narratives with global audiences. She highlighted the critical need for filmmakers to access specialized expertise and audience intelligence. According to Tansley, these programs are designed to empower creators, ensuring their stories achieve maximum impact and resonance worldwide. In addition to these programs, Screen Australia is also launching "Audience In/Sight," a series of industry presentations and thought-leadership pieces exploring innovative production and marketing strategies. The inaugural event, a webinar co-hosted by Publikum, is scheduled for July 14 and will focus on leveraging audience data for individual projects. These new programs integrate seamlessly with Screen Australia's recently launched Narrative Content Market & Audience Programs—Assets, Audience Testing, and Channel Management—which are expected to reopen for applications in the coming weeks.

These initiatives underscore a pivotal shift in how Australian cinema is being nurtured and positioned for success on the world stage. By investing in audience intelligence and strategic mentorship, Screen Australia is not only fostering local talent but also building a stronger foundation for Australian stories to captivate and connect with diverse audiences globally.
