Mary Mina to Star in Alexandra Matheou's Debut Feature 'Shibboleth'

Greek actress Mary Mina, recognized for her role as the High Priestess in Olympic Flame lighting ceremonies since 2024, has secured the lead in Alexandra Matheou's inaugural feature film, 'Shibboleth'. This drama delves into the complexities of a surrogacy love triangle, promising a nuanced exploration of human relationships.

Alexandra Matheou's debut feature, 'Shibboleth', is a project gaining significant attention, being selected for Cannes' Focus CoPro initiative. This program champions first-time filmmakers by supporting their early-stage projects. The film's narrative centers on a surrogate mother who, while on vacation with the expectant couple, finds herself entangled in an unexpected romantic dynamic. This unfolding scenario forces her to confront the profound emotional toll of surrogacy, and the realization that her commitment often extends beyond the act of birth itself.

Matheou articulates her vision for 'Shibboleth' on the Focus CoPro platform, describing it as a story set in a place seemingly untouched by mortality. She poses a fundamental question: if eternal life were attainable, would it genuinely enhance human existence, or would it dismantle our understanding of what it means to live? This philosophical underpinning suggests a film that will probe deep existential themes alongside its emotional drama.

The production of 'Shibboleth' is spearheaded by Maria Drandaki's Greek company, Homemade Films, with crucial backing from the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture. The project is currently in the process of securing financing and finalizing its cast, with principal photography slated for the summer of 2027 across locations in Cyprus and Greece. Concurrently, Matheou is set to unveil her new short film, 'Free Eliza (Notes on an Anatomical Imperfection)', at the Director's Fortnight on Thursday, May 20. This short introduces Eliza, a hotel employee born without the capacity to smile, who resists societal pressure to conform to a world obsessed with positive appearances. 'Free Eliza' is also co-produced by Homemade Films, which is notably the main producer behind this year's Un Certain Regard selection, 'Titanic Ocean', directed by Konstantina Kotzamani.

The impending release of 'Shibboleth' and the premiere of 'Free Eliza' underscore Alexandra Matheou's burgeoning presence in the international film circuit. Her work, characterized by thought-provoking narratives and emotional depth, is poised to captivate audiences and critics alike, exploring contemporary issues through a unique directorial lens.
