In a significant organizational shift, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is adjusting its internal structure as it looks ahead to major transformations concerning the Academy Awards. This initiative includes the departure of Teni Melidonian from her full-time position as Chief Oscars Officer, although she will transition into a consultancy role for the next year.
This change is strategically timed with the impending 100th Academy Awards ceremony in 2028, and a pivotal move for the telecast from ABC to YouTube, slated for 2029, which also coincides with the event's relocation to downtown Los Angeles. CEO Bill Kramer emphasized that these adjustments are crucial for aligning teams and bolstering efficiency and strategic coherence in preparation for these historic milestones. The reorganization will see key functions, such as member screenings and awards ticketing, integrated under Meredith Shea's Membership, Impact, and Industry team, while Jennifer Davidson's Marketing, Communications, and Content team will oversee awards production, special events, and talent relations.
Melidonian, who has been an integral part of the Academy for over two decades, most recently served as the primary liaison between AMPAS and Disney, which holds the broadcasting rights for the Oscars through ABC. Her departure marks a new era for the Academy, with a clear focus on adapting to the evolving media landscape and strengthening its operational framework to navigate future challenges and opportunities effectively. Kramer expressed profound gratitude for Melidonian's extensive contributions, highlighting her lasting impact on the organization.
The Academy's proactive restructuring demonstrates its commitment to innovation and adaptability in a rapidly changing industry. By streamlining operations and embracing new platforms like YouTube, the Academy is not only preparing for its centennial celebration but also laying the groundwork for a more dynamic and accessible future for the Oscars, ensuring its continued relevance and engagement with global audiences.
